CDFO – Certificate in Design Firm Operations

Certificate in Design Firm Operations (CDFO™)

Elevate Professional Recognition in Design Firm Operations

The Certificate in Design Firm Operations (CDFO™) is SDA’s foundational certification credential. It recognizes demonstrated expertise in the integrated operational functions of architecture, engineering, and design firms.

The CDFO validates the knowledge, professional judgment, and leadership required to manage complex firm operations across multiple disciplines. It reflects the realities of today’s A/E/C environment, where operational leaders must align strategy, financial performance, people, and process to drive firm success.

Who Should Pursue the CDFO Credential?

CDFO is designed for professionals whose responsibilities extend beyond a single functional area and require strategic, cross-disciplinary decision-making.

The credential is appropriate for professionals who:

  • Manage or influence multiple operational areas within a design firm

  • Support firm leadership through operational strategy and execution

  • Integrate people, processes, and performance across departments

  • Seek formal recognition of their operational expertise

If your role spans more than one area of firm operations, CDFO was designed for you.

What the CDFO Credential Represents

Earning the CDFO credential signifies:

  • Verified expertise in design firm operations

  • Professional credibility with firm leadership, peers, and clients

  • Commitment to operational excellence and continuous professional growth

  • Readiness for expanded leadership and responsibility

The CDFO assessment is grounded in real-world application. It measures operational judgment and integrated knowledge—not memorization of isolated facts.

CDFO Focus Areas

The CDFO examination evaluates knowledge and decision-making across six core focus areas essential to successful design firm operations:

  • Leadership

  • Finance

  • Human Resources

  • Marketing & Business Development

  • Operations

  • Project Management

These areas reflect the interconnected nature of operational leadership within modern design firms.

Exam Schedule

The CDFO exam is offered twice annually to allow candidates to plan their certification pathway:

  • Spring Exam: Administered in conjunction with EDSymposium (May/June)

  • Fall Exam: Administered during EDConnect (October)

Application deadlines and detailed exam information are published in advance of each testing window.

Application & Eligibility

Candidates must meet SDA’s established eligibility requirements and submit a completed application by the published deadline. Applications are reviewed to confirm qualifications prior to exam approval.

For current CDFA™ holders:
The Leadership examination serves as the final requirement to complete the CDFO credential.

Preparing for the Exam

SDA provides CDFO resource guides and materials aligned with the exam focus areas to support candidate preparation. Candidates are encouraged to draw upon their professional experience, continuing education, and SDA educational resources as they prepare.

Credential Use & Maintenance

Individuals who earn the CDFO credential may use the designation “CDFO” following their name in professional materials, including email signatures, résumés, and online profiles, in accordance with SDA guidelines.

To maintain the credential, CDFO holders complete annual continuing education requirements, reinforcing ongoing professional development and industry relevance.
