General Certification Questions
What is the difference between CDFA™ and CDFO™?
The Certified Design Firm Administrator™ (CDFA™) is SDA’s legacy certification designation. While it is no longer open to new applicants, many members continue to maintain the credential.
The Certificate in Design Firm Operations™ (CDFO™) is SDA’s current foundational certification credential. It builds on the CDFA legacy while expanding its focus to reflect the integrated operational leadership required in today’s design firms.
If I currently hold the CDFA designation, do I need to reapply?
No. CDFA holders may continue to maintain their credential in accordance with SDA renewal requirements.
CDFA holders who wish to pursue the CDFO credential should review the CDFO eligibility and examination requirements.
How long does the CDFO designation remain valid?
The CDFO designation remains active as long as renewal requirements are met annually.
Examination Questions
What happens if I do not pass the CDFO examination?
Candidates who do not achieve a passing score may retake the examination within the timeframe outlined in SDA’s certification policy. Retesting procedures and applicable fees are published in advance of each exam window.
If I register for an exam window but cannot attend, what should I do?
Candidates should contact SDA Headquarters as soon as possible. Exam transfers or deferrals may be permitted in accordance with published certification policies.
Credential Use & Professional Status
May I use the CDFO designation if I change employers?
Yes. The CDFO credential belongs to the individual, not the employer. As long as renewal requirements are met, you may continue to use the designation.
May I use the CDFO designation if I leave the A/E/C industry?
Individuals who leave the design industry may maintain the CDFO designation provided they continue to meet annual renewal requirements. Additional review may be required in certain circumstances.
What happens if I miss renewal requirements?
Failure to complete renewal requirements may result in suspension of the credential and loss of permission to use the CDFO designation. Individuals must restore their certification status before resuming use of the credential.
