Certification at SDA

Professional certification demonstrates commitment, credibility, and mastery in the business of design.

The Society for Design Administration’s certification pathway recognizes professionals who lead and support the operational success of architecture, engineering, and design firms. Rooted in the long-standing Certified Design Firm Administrator (CDFA™) designation, SDA’s program has evolved to meet the expanding demands of today’s firms through the Certificate in Design Firm Operations (CDFO™).

From CDFA to CDFO

For more than two decades, the Certified Design Firm Administrator (CDFA™) credential served as a mark of excellence in firm administration and operational leadership.

Today, the Certificate in Design Firm Operations (CDFO™) builds on that legacy — expanding its focus to include leadership, financial management, operations strategy, and cross-functional expertise within the A/E/C industry.

CDFA remains a recognized legacy designation. CDFO represents SDA’s current and future certification pathway.

Certificate in Design Firm Operations (CDFO™)

The Certificate in Design Firm Operations (CDFO™) is SDA’s foundational certification credential.

Who it’s for:
Professionals who lead or support firm operations and seek to demonstrate comprehensive, cross-functional knowledge of how successful design firms operate and grow.

CDFO-FM™ - Credential Advanced Financial Management Credential

The CDFO-FM™ designation is an advanced credential available to professionals who have first earned the CDFO™.

Building on the foundational knowledge of the CDFO program, the CDFO-FM™ recognizes specialized expertise in financial management within design firms, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and firm financial strategy.

Who it’s for:
Finance and operations leaders responsible for guiding firm performance, financial health, and long-term strategic planning.
