Each day our profession becomes more specialized, and clients require architects and engineers to have the certifications that prove the acquisition of this knowledge. Have you ever been confused by all of those letters that appear in RFP’s for the A/E/C credentials required to even propose on a project? Some represent a significant amount of education and training for staff. Helping firms determine which credentials are most meaningful, whether for marketing purposes or to develop an overall educational/certification program in the firm, is part of the SDA’s mission to enhance practice management in all A/E firms. We hope this is a helpful resource to the A/E/C community.

AAHID	American Academy of Healthcare Interior Designers
Overview	Certifies the knowledge, skills and abilities of healthcare interior designers, distinguishing them from other architects, designers and decorators; also promotes research of healthcare interior environments and collaborates in developing improved products for healthcare interiors.
Educational Requirements	Bachelor's degree in Interior design - CIDA-accredited program

ACHA	American College of Healthcare Architects
Overview	The intent of the certification process is to provide representation to the public that a Board Certified healthcare architect has successfully completed an approved educational program and an evaluation of relevant experience, including an examination process designed to assess the knowledge and skills requisite to the performance of high-quality service in the practice of healthcare architecture.
Educational Requirements	Architecture degree
Prerequisites/Experience	Demonstration of practice as a licensed architect for not less than 5 yrs in at least one jurisdiction of the US, its territories, or Canada; A currently valid license to practice architecture in at least one jurisdiction of the US, its possessions, or in a province of Canada; Demonstration of a period following licensure of at least three of the past five yrs in which the specialty of healthcare facility architecture represents the majority of an applicant's full-time practice; Three (3) letters of recommendation from atchitects who know your work personally and who are not in the firm where you are currently employed; Three (3) reference from clients must contain specific language that indicated the applicant's specific role on th eprojects submitted with the portfolio; At least 3 but no more than 9 projects from the past 5 yrs.
Examinations	Exam - 2 hours. 110 quesions. The ACHA Examination was developed to objectively measure the knowledge and skills required of healthcare architects and to foster uniform standards for measuring such knowledge and skills. The examination is based on a content outline developed from a national survey of healthcare architects which identified tasks significant to practice. The objective exam consists of 110 multiple-choice questions (100 scored and 10 nonscored pretest questions). The exam duration is two (2) hours. The exam is computer-based. Exam given 3 times a year (March, June, Sept)
Continuing Education	Complete 18 learning units (LU) each year, with 12 hours being specific to healthcare.

ACP	Associate Commissioning Professional
Overview	Person wishing to become a CCP but lacks experience and education in testing for full certification regarding the commissioning process.

AICP	American Institute of Certified Planners
Overview	AICP Certified planners are members of APA’s (American Planning Association) professional institute, AICP (American Institute of Certified Planners). Certified planners have demonstrated a commitment to high standards of professional practice and a mastery of theories and tools of planning.

AEP	Associate Environmental Professional
Overview	This is an entry level program of professional environmental certification. It is aimed at those persons beginning their careers as well as those who may not possess a college degree.
Educational Requirements	1 year in a bachelor's degree program, such as environmental engineering, health/science, environmental management or hazardous materials management.
Prerequisites/Experience	3 years of acceptable work experience may be substituted for each year of an academic degree program.
Examinations	Exam - 1-1/2-hour. Multiple choice, open book exam. The AEP exam tests for a person's general understanding of: 30% environmental regulations; 30% program implementation relating to pollution prevention, emergency preparedness and response, site inspections, permit requirements, hazardous materials/waste management; 30% chemistry, toxicology and geology; 10 % site and risk assessment; 10% technology of monitoring, abatement and remediation; 5% ethics, legal obligations and personal liability.

AIA	Member of the American Institute of Architects
Overview	Certifies that the member is licensed by a U.S. state board to practice the profession of architecture and has completed all the education, experience and examination requirements therefore, and is a member of The American Institute of Architects
Educational Requirements	5-year degree from accredited program or 4-year degree plus Masters.
Prerequisites/Experience	Individuals with an architectural license from a U.S. licensing authority are eligible for AIA membership. Experience and exam are required to attain licensure.
Examinations	The Architectural Registration Exam consists of seven divisions that include multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, and check-all that apply questions as well as graphic vignettes.
Continuing Education	18 learning units (LU) per year for membership renewal. Of those 18 LU hours, at least 8 hours must be in Health, Safety, and Welfare (HSW) topics. Of those 8 HSW hours, at least 4 hours must be in topics relating to sustainable design (SD).

BSCP	Building Systems Commissioning Certfied Professional
Overview	This is qualified individual working full-time for a NEBB-certified firm (NEBB = National Environmental Balancing Bureau).
Educational Requirements	Bachelors of Science degree in Engineering + 2 yrs experience, or Associates Degree in Engineering technology + 4 yrs experience
Prerequisites/Experience	Be employed by a certified firm or candidate firm on a full-time basis; Hold a management position in the firm, be able to represent the firm on all building systems commissioning matters, and have a reputation of integrity with building owners, consultants and awarding authorities; Have experience equal to any of the following: 1. BS Engineering + two (2) years of supervisory experience in HVAC installation or HVAC design work, or 2. Associates Degree Engineering Technology + four (4) years of supervisory experience in TAB or in the HVAC industry, or 3. Overview	CCCA Certification demonstrates that one understands all facets of the construction process and contractual relationships, and that one is skilled at construction contract administration in an era of complex projects, tighter delivery schedules, and shrinking budgets.

CCS	Certified Construction Specifier
Overview	CCS Certification demonstrates one's excellence in specifications and contract document preparation. A CSI CCS is a skilled product researcher who knows how to investigate and identify cost-effective, efficient solutions, and then communicates those solutions through specifications.

Prerequisites/Experience	Candidate must have passed the CDT Exam; have prepared, helped prepare or coordinated either Bidding Requirements or Division 01-General Requirements; have directly prepared specification sections actually used in construction; and must have at least 5 years experience in a construction design discipline (not including academic work)
Examinations	Exam - 4 hours. 200 Multiple choice questions. Computer based. To pass, candidates must receive a grade of 75% or higher.
Continuing Education	CCS certification is valid for three years. Ceritficants are required to earn an average of 8 hours of continuing education = 8.0 PDHs (Professional Development Hours) per Certification Year. Within the 8 hours, a minimum of 50% must be related to the professional practice of the certification being renewed, as defined by the CSI Practice Guide. Up to 50% may accrue from serving on a CSI standing or ad hoc committee or on a CSI task team. CESSWI	Certified Erosion, Sediment and Storm Water Inspector
Overview	The mission of the Certified Erosion, Sediment, and Storm Water Inspector (CESSWI) Program is to serve the public trust through the certification of individuals who are technically and ethically qualified to provide nationally consistent inspections of erosion, sediment, and storm water management practices for compliance with an approved site plan/Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP) including compliance with applicable (local, state, provincial and federal) laws and regulations.

CFM	Certified Floodplain Manager
Overview	The Association of State Floodplain Managers(ASFPM) has established a national program for professional certification of floodplain managers. The program recognizes continuing education and professional development that enhance the knowledge and performance of local, state, federal, and private-sector floodplain managers. For the purposes of the ASFPM CFM Program, floodplain management is defined as "Activities and efforts undertaken to reduce flood losses and human suffering and to protect the natural and beneficial values and functions of floodplains."

Prerequisites/Experience	The ASFPM CFM Program is directed toward individuals from widely varying occupations, interests, and educational backgrounds who have routine floodplain management duties. CID	Certified Interior Designer
Overview	Certified Interior Designers (or Registered Interior Designer, in some states) are qualified by evidence of a combination of interior design education and experience and passage of the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) Exam. To date, Interior Design certification is regulated in 27 U.S. states, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, and 8 Canadian provinces.

Notary	Notary Public
Overview	A notary acts as an official, unbiased witness to the identity and signature of the person who comes before the notary for a specific purpose. The person may be taking an oath, giving oral or written testimony, or signing or acknowledging his or her signature on a legal document. In each case, the notary attests that certain formalities have been observed. The key function is to be certain that the person appearing before the notary is who that person claims to be. Virginia law defines certain “notarial acts” which a notary is empowered to perform. Notaries must constantly be aware that every notarial act affects the legal rights of others.Carelessness or negligence by the notary may injure these rights. A notary who fails to perform notarial acts in accordance with the law may be sued for damages caused by their official misconduct. The employer of a notary may also be liable for the notary’s misconduct under certain conditions described later in this handbook.

Prerequisites/Experience	Typical requirements for a notary: (1) at least eighteen years old and (2) must be able to read and write the English language. Because of a U. S. PE	Professional Engineer
Overview	Individual licensed in a U.S. state to practice engineering and/or use the title "Professional Engineer"
Educational Requirements	Bachelor's degree
Prerequisites/Experience	Requirements vary by by state but generally an individual must satisfy a combination of education and experience and have achieved a passing score on the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam. Candidates typically must provide several references as part of the PE application who can attest to the candidate's competency and integrity. The FE exam may be waived by some states for specific combinations of education and/or experience (see EIT/EI description above).
Examinations	Exam - 8-hour. Open-book, written exam for most engineering disciplines. The exams are prepared by NCEES and administered by each state. The NCEES Structural Engineering exam is a 16-hour, open-book, written exam.

Overview	Individual licensed in a U.S. state to practice landscape architecture and/or use the title "Landscape Architect". Some states list this license as Registered Landscape Architect (RLA) or Certified Landscape Architect (CLA), however the most accepted designation, and the one advocated by the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) is "Professional Landscape Architect" (PLA).

Overview	The Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) is a voluntary certification offered by the non-profit corporate program, the Society of Wetland Scientists Professional Certification Program (SWSPCP).Certification is not required by any agency and has no official or legal standing.
